Health note: persistent leakage, pain, blood in urine, difficulty urinating, or possible infection deserves professional medical evaluation.

Types of Urinary Incontinence in Women

Understand stress, urgency, mixed and other urinary incontinence patterns and why identifying the cause matters before choosing treatment or supplements.

Medical context matters. Urinary leakage, urgency and frequency can have many causes. A supplement should not replace evaluation, diagnosis or treatment. NIDDK advises speaking with a health professional about bladder-control symptoms. NIDDK

Urinary incontinence means accidental urine leakage. It is a condition/symptom pattern rather than a single disease, and the type matters because different causes and treatments are possible. NIDDK

Stress incontinence

Leakage occurs when pressure on the bladder increases—for example during coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting or exercise. Pelvic-floor weakness can contribute.

Urgency incontinence

A sudden strong urge is followed by leakage before reaching a toilet. Bladder-muscle and nerve signaling can be involved.

Other patterns

Functional incontinence, overflow/retention-related leakage and mixed patterns also occur. Because symptoms can overlap, a history, physical exam, bladder diary and sometimes testing may be used to clarify the cause. NIDDK diagnosis

Where supplements fit

Supplements may be marketed as supportive wellness products, but they are not a substitute for identifying the type and cause of incontinence. Established management can include lifestyle changes, pelvic-floor training, medications, devices or procedures depending on diagnosis. NIDDK treatment
